Anticipated Imprisonment
The found-guilty plotter – who had been subject to house arrest in his residence while a number of court processes and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the coming days, during mounting speculation that he will be sent to a notorious high-security facility.
Past Comments on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right former paratrooper displayed little sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“What’s the need to give these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”
Jail Facility Debate
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he expected the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive problems – the consequence of a life-threatening stabbing during the last political campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing forty inmates: “It's virtually one meter squared per prisoner.
“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the horrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Allies React
The senator isn't the sole person speaking out ahead of the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.
Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its history”.
“It is an injustice that gnaws the spirits of millions Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Yet his anticipated incarceration has also pleased the feelings of many other people who think he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from taking power – and also plotting to have him murdered.
The lawmaker, a representative for the current leader's allied group, said: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to get proper treatment – but respectful care in prison. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time praising the tough conditions of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the extreme right – which has consistently asserted that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to tour a prison to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.
“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning handling”.
Potential Jail Conditions
