A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose behind the shooting is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the property managing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," an official report confirmed.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.

Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," added an official.
