California's Governor States He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

The California governor has emerged as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and championing a initiative that would expand Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to withhold federal funds from California and threatened eliminating the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy said, following a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in three deaths and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier announced he was holding back additional funds from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment addressing the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recent study revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom commented while traveling several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
