A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
